“Drugs don’t work in patients who don’t take them,” former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop once famously said. The cost to the system of non-adherence ranges from an estimated $100 billion to $300 billion annually. Individual health organizations, from the American Heart Association all the way to big pharma, represent the range of interests across the system as a whole grappling with the problem. Pharmacists, of course, are on the front line with an unparalleled opportunity to stem the health system’s cost, improve the health and quality of life of our patients, and increase our top-line revenues. Medication synchronization programs are a good way to increase adherence, but they also take some extra legwork and commitment to get up and running.
