The Community Pharmacist: Preventing Heart Attack and Stroke (Audio)

February 16, 2016 | Pamela Youngberg Dickson

This month we’ve been devoting time to celebrating American Heart Health month with a series on how lifestyle impacts cardiovascular health and how prescription drugs are used to help bring conditions like high cholesterol and high blood pressure under control. This week, Minnesota pharmacist Jessica Astrup Ehret talks about how those factors come together to increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, and how making incremental changes can improve a patient’s risk profile. Tune in—and invite your patients to do the same—to “Preventing Heart Attack and Stroke.” You’ll learn:

  • What happens in the body during a heart attack or stroke;
  • What risk factors a patient can and can’t change; and
  • How other conditions—like diabetes and stress—compound a patient’s risk for heart attack and stroke.
