Most pharmacies employ a mix of help: those who are very talented and motivated, those who have become complacent over time, and all along the continuum between the two. Before bringing in new faces, I think it’s important to assess the role of each member of the team to make sure that all of the existing employees will still be able to meaningfully contribute when a new person starts. Do any of your existing team members have the capacity and drive to take on the new tasks that you're hoping to implement? If so, move on to the next step and start training them! If not, it’s time to start identifying potential new employees.

The Independent Difference: Building an Effective Pharmacy Team (Part 1 of 4)

I know I'm not alone when I say that the people I work with can either make or break my day. On a higher level, having great pharmacists, technicians, management, leadership, and customer service people can make or break our entire business.

My grandfather had a knack for finding people, training them, treating them well, and holding onto them for the long-term. My dad carried this tradition into the next generation of our business: he would find a high school-aged employee, mentor them, and hold on tight so that they would come back to the business after they completed their schooling and be ready to carry the business to the next level.
