The best people want to get better at their jobs. As a manager or business owner, supporting those efforts goes a long way toward retaining them. Although it may not seem like we have enough time to plan for ongoing development—much less execute on it—I think we need to consider how much it really costs us to lose a motivated employee, and make development a priority.

Most pharmacies employ a mix of help: those who are very talented and motivated, those who have become complacent over time, and all along the continuum between the two. Before bringing in new faces, I think it’s important to assess the role of each member of the team to make sure that all of the existing employees will still be able to meaningfully contribute when a new person starts. Do any of your existing team members have the capacity and drive to take on the new tasks that you're hoping to implement? If so, move on to the next step and start training them! If not, it’s time to start identifying potential new employees.
